Possible Casing Activity
Apr 9 2007 - 9:00am
Over the Easter weekend I noticed several times a beige car with two young men driving aimlessly around the Keyes Ferry and Wide River Farms area. At one point they were stopped for no apparent reason at the corner of Laurel and Keyes Ferry Road. The driver was a white male wearing a ski cap.
Any one with a plate number or additional descriptors, please feel free to add the info in a comment. Thanks.

Shannondale-Large Black Dog
Two reports have been received describing a large, black dog with a collar on Rolling Lane near Caesar Road. The dog has been acting very strangely, showing friendliness to some and unwarranted aggressiveness to others. A young mother and her child were "held hostage" in their vehicle, and again later in their home, by the dog due to his bristling, growling and drooling behavior. This was observed by a second person, who also described the dog's random behavior.
Animal Control was notified, but will not respond until tomorrow. The dog does seem to be staying in the area.
CAUTION: DO NOT approach this animal since rabies is a distinct possibility. If the animal is spotted, notify Animal Control immediately by calling Dispatch at 725-8484.

Theft of Beer from Stores.
A young male has been involved in the theft of a case of beer from two local stores, Weber's and Sweet Springs, in the past week.
The male was seen driving a turquoise Neon with possible MD plates and may now be living somewhere in The Mountain area.
In both thefts, he parked his vehicle so that the plate # could not be readily seen, walked into the store, grabbed a case of beer and quickly left. A female was waiting in the car at Sweet Springs. In the Webers incident, a male accomplice was with him.
The Sheriff's Dept. and SSP are interested in getting a vehicle plate # and a location on this suspect so that he may be stopped before there is another deadly DUI incident in the area.
Anonymous info may be sent by clicking on the "Contact" tab at the top of this page. THANKS.
Break-in on Keyes Gap Road
At approx. 6:30 p.m., scanner reported a break-in on the 1200 block of Keys Gap Road, apparently discovered when resident returned home. No other info is available at this time, and the report is being posted to ALERT area residents to a serious security issue.
Residents who are at home during the day, or even riding through the area, please report any suspicious activity, to include teens roaming around when they should be in school. Be alert for anything "out of place" including strange vehicles and persons "scouting homes" where residents are at work. Get tag numbers where possible and call 725-8484 to report info to the Sheriff's Deputies out on patrol.
Remember, statistics show that most crimes are solved or prevented due to resident involvement!
Person in need
SSP received two calls about an adult male wandering around the Redbird area (Gate 1), entering homes without permission and asking for money. The subject claimed to be living in the area.
The person claimed he had lost his job, had no money and had no heat or electricity in his home. He was walking into homes of other residents in the area thru UNLOCKED DOORS while residents were at home, and he appeared somewhat confused and disorganized. He stated to one person that he had recently used drugs and had no one to help him.
The Sheriff's Office was contacted to investigate the situation since the person appeared to be in distress and no one was able to confirm that the person was a resident.
Two Deputies were able to locate the person and speak to him and a neighbor. They were able to verify that he was not a missing or wanted person, and that he did not appear to be in immediate distress. They were going to refer the situation to Human Services for possible assistance.
Residents in the area are advised to lock their doors to prevent uninvited guests from entering without their knowledge. Hopefully, getting "The System" involved will assist this person. Residents are asked to call Nat at 725-SAFE if there are further problems or concerns.

BOL: 2 door black sedan.
Two males in their 20's, driving a small black sedan with oversized spoiler, were seen knocking on the door of a home on Lakeside Drive where there was clearly no one at home. They then drove by the house a couple of times before leaving.
They were then seen in the Gate 3/4 area driving erratically and flying through the stop sign at Mission Road before going into Gate 4 at a fairly high rate of speed.
Please report any other suspicious or illegal activity and try to obtain a plate number if possible. You may email me directly if you wish to remain anonymous. Thanks.
Dangerous ATV Riding II
around 6pm 08/23/06 two guys on a bright purple sporty style ATV came tearing down Mission Rd from the direction of gate 3 passed gate 2 and up around Johnsons Curve (the Hill) towards Gate 1.
2 persons, driver definitely male had on white sleeveless shirt - no helmet, passanger looked smaller in frame not positive of gender.
I was in a stopped position waiting to turn and these guys were driving sooooo fast that I heard them before I saw them.....it was lucky I decided not make my turn as they were going way faster than I expected and if I would have turned they would have hit me...it was totally insane how fast they were going.....my guess would be they were driving in excess of 55mph....
When they buzzed passed me I could not even turn my head fast enough to keep up with them...
.....no lights, or helmets....bloody idiots....
Scammers Or Worse--BOL
Two separate, but probably related incidents, happened yesterday between 3 and 4 pm and were reported to SSP today:
--White Mule Rd. area--cau. male, 25, 5'7", stocky build, short brown hair, dressed very casually, walking door-to-door "selling magazines for his daughter's college scholarship." Person was sweating profusely and having difficulty keeping thoughts organized. Caller wondered if he was "on something." Person questioned resident as to whether she REALLY had someone on the phone she was carrying, and then asked "Do you have any money?" Caller was suspicious that this male could be "casing homes" for future break-in.
--Lakeside Drive--cau. male, age 18, 6'2", reddish-blonde hair, came into back yard where resident was working, told resident that front door was open "but I didn't go in." He then asked for a thousand dollar donation for a scholarship and stated he just moved here to live with his Grandmother, but was not able to give a name or location. He was offered yardwork for $10/hour and stated that was low pay and did not return later.
Two vehicles have been associated with these scammers: A silver SUV w/Florida tags; and a Red Olds Alero, probably w/WV tags.
At one home, ID was shown that indicated the person was representing "American Circulation Enterprises." ASK TO SEE A WV BUSINESS LICENSE--that is your only assurance you will get your magazines IF you decide to purchase anything. A complaint is in process with the Attorney General's Office.
If approached, use caution. Try to obtain ID, alert SSP and call 725-8484 to ask for Deputy to investigate and ID persons involved. If ID is checked, person will usually leave area since they know they can be tracked if a crime is committed. Keep doors locked to avoid walk-in surprises. Do NOT admit that you are home alone and do NOT allow anyone in your home.

Thank you to Deputy Holz for supporting Mountain Watch, and taking personal time out to attend and present at our meetings. Your support and that of all LE is extremely important to the success of all Neighborhood Watch programs in our county.
A special thanks to SSP who has continued year after year to keep the Shannondale area a safe place and has supported our program with knowledge and moral support. Thanks to Ron who has played a significant part in this website and helped me from the getgo.
Mission Rd - Vehicle Pass - Double Yellow Line
Mountain Watch Meeting Summary - 5/20
Posted May 24th, 2006 by nwatch2The topic of discussion was Drug Activity Recognition and how to assist police. Dep. Holz gave the presentation, as there was a last minute schedule change for Detective Bonifant. We wish to thank Dep. Holz for giving up part of his day off to make the presentation - this clearly shows his commitment to our cause.
There is always something to be learned at our meetings. Most importantly - how to improve our observation skills, what to report, when to report, and to whom to report.
There can be many signs/suspicions of drug activity. Increased traffic at a particular house - both vehicle and foot traffic, especially at strange hours; noxious odors coming from an area; finding drug paraphernalia; repeated observable exchanges of items, especially where money is visible, and houses/buildings where extreme security measures have been taken. These were a few of the items discussed.

scam?
Around noon today (4/19) was walking in my yard, noticed a metallic blue/green Ford F150 pick up truck driving slowly down the hill on Blackberry. Truck drove past my driveway, stopped, backed up and then drove up my driveway. The driver had dark hair (did not walk close to the truck) and was probably 25-35 age range. He said "just following up to see if you're ready to have your driveway sealed". Advised him no, then he backed his truck down the driveway and left - leading toward Sylvan. Could not see tag to get number - drove up the driveway and backed down it. Too far for me to see when he got back on the road. There was also no sign of any kind on the truck.
Problem - have never seen this person before. He was never here to ask about sealing the driveway. He may or may not be reputable.

Fire Danger - Notification Signs
Posted March 21st, 2006 by nwatch1

Has anyone ever seen any fire danger or warning signs around the county anywhere...I am talking about the ones that you would normally see in a state park with 'smokey the bear' standing next to it...or the ones with the dial!
Would be cheap and very useful regarding fire danger status...since people seem to need a reminder that lighting mulch on windy days is not a good idea...
I believe we are still in an extreme fire risk status right now - but not a sign to be seen anywhere!
Maybe a Fire Chief could respond!
DISSEMINATION OF EMERGENCY INFORMATION
Posted March 15th, 2006 by nwatch1I know that this is a current topic throughout the county and is on everyones mind after yesterdays second fire incident...but seriously how should info be disseminated.
Last night SSP did an excellent job here on this board - I personally had a scanner so was well aware of what was being said...but seriously...what would be the best way to handle this? What would be the most realistic way of handling it?
How many people did you call last night to let them know something was going on?
Early Spring Community Watch Gathering
Posted March 2nd, 2006 by nwatch1Seeking interested able bodied good samaritans who would like to help organise and/or participate in a spring community event.
We have a park-like location that we could use on Mission Rd - with river front access, now its just a matter of coming up with some ideas for what the gathering purpose would be (apart from some good family & community fun). Of course we would like to have a Safety, Watch, Community Theme
Ideas Thus Far -
*Ask the Blue Ridge Fire Company if they would be interested in providing hotdogs and burgers (BBQ) as a fund raiser for them and food for us!
*Do the Child ID Program
ATVs on Blackberry Lane
Saw 2 ATVs at 3:54 PM today (2/27) going past the front of my house on Blackberry Lane, turning onto Robin and then going up over the hill
Suspicious vehicle
Just wanted to let you all know of a suspicious vehicle I saw circling the neighborhood at gate 1 this morning.
The vehicle was a black (with some gray) pickup (maybe late 80's or early 90's).
The license plate number was a DC tag #DPK2874. The DC plate number is what I found odd that and the fact that he made a right onto Redbird (he would have to turn left to go to gate 1). Maybe they were just lost but with all the drug activity recently, I just thought someone should keep an eye out for it.
Mountain Watch Training/Meeting - location changed
Posted February 23rd, 2006 by nwatch2Saturday, March 25 is scheduled for the next training/meeting. Will be in the basement of the Community Center at the beginning of Mission Rd.near Rt. 9. Time - NOON. Deputy Holz will be in charge of this meeting. Topic - Assisting Police at Crime Scenes. Mark your calendars now, so hopefully you will be able to attend.
Please note the place has been changed to the basement of the Community Center across the street from the church.
What Would You Like - Suggestions Please!
Posted February 14th, 2006 by nwatch1Education & Community is a big part of our initiative...we have some informational & educational training sessions already planned but would like to know what you want to know about, what would you like to be involved with?
We would do our best collectively to get the subject matter experts for that particular topic.
How about some ideas on some fun events that we could get the community involved with - that also support our initiative?
What about a Child Identification Program?
Keep the ideas flowing.....
