I had installed it so that I could alert users to impending problems due to ongoing development - or they could let me know something wasn't working - without the hassle of e-mail or creating a post. I have removed it for the time being. It will be replaced with a custom 'broadcast' feature in the future as time allows.

NWatch - Where Does It Fit

I have been wrestling with this issue for weeks! Comments Please.

I have 3 potential solutions - they all hinge on the definition of "Community Groups" on this site.

NW is organised top down by communities/locales, then by sections (for larger communities) then by blocks....

If the definition of a "Community Group" is a locale then my answer is easy - the individual NW group goes under the community it functions in....

If the definition of "Community Group" is not a locale then my options are to:
A/ Set up individual NW community Groups - e.g. River View Park NW, and Shannondale NW...OR

B/ Set up a General NW Community Group - bucketing all NW together and then linking back to each of the communities...individually.

I am still getting a grip of the power and flexibility of the site architecture.

What are your thoughts...

Either way please lets define Community Groups...and if necessary rename it.

Community Groups

A 'Community Group' is a way to tie together all information related to a specific geographic region. That includes reports, users, pages and forums. When this site is more complete, you will see a map on the Groups page with the various regions outlined. Adding something to a group does not exclude it from also belonging to the site in general. Groups are inclusive, but not exclusive.

The potential problem is well illustrated with Shannondale. In order to make everyone happy, there should probably be two groups - Shannondale NW & SSP.
Geographic regions could overlap or be superimposed, but that is not my intention.

The root of the problem is the controversy over the purpose and scope of this site. If it is to be an online implementation of neighborhood watch, then SSP probably doesn't belong here as it's not part of NW. However, my original intent was to: improve safety and security in Jefferson County by implementing a community driven website integrating crime reports, suspicious activity reports, video surveillance, discussion, neighborhood watch and geographical data.

Neal, myself and others have also voiced concern that a traditional NW program doesn't work as intended in neighborhoods where you can't see your neighbor's house. That describes most of east Jefferson County.

My goal is to be all inclusive - we accept, filter, coallate and disseminate all data regardless of source. The ultimate power and utility of this site will be directly related to the number of people who take advantage of it and who file reports. I'm still not sure how best to make that fit within the confines of one group per geopraphic location...

Groups could be further defined as blocks, but I'm not sure the complexity would be warranted at the present time. Lets revisit that when we hit 10,000 users :)

Community Group

The Community group definition is perfect, as it addresses "the place on earth", (regions, zones, communities, blocks). Most People are visual, and for this site, reporting and response are location based. As we gather more UI data from the site (10,000 members :-)) use I suspect that we will see "responders" (nWatch block captains, SSP, LE) subscribe to one or many communities based on their interest, job, responsibility.

IE: Neal Nilsen is President of RVA, is nWatch block captain for Mountain Brook, is identifies as SSP zone 10 and JC response Sector 9.

Neal will be responsible to respond to all nWatch reports for his block.

SSP may track and respond to certain activity within zone 10. JCES will dispatch regarding certain activity in Sector 9.

JCLE or state police will respond to certain activity in Sector 9.

All may update incident status, and all may use DSS reporting to identify data for the future.
