Message from Our Wireless Chief
Nat asked me to post the following: From October to Dec. 28, a total of 16 arrests or warrants-issued have transpired, counting both adults and juveniles, due to information received from the Community, the work of SSP Responders and the great efforts of LE, both County Deputies and State Troopers. IT IS WORKING! Sometimes the pace seems very slow, especially when crime hits close to home, but "gumshoe work" is tedious and time-consuming. Please continue to have patience with us and the dedicated LE folks if your tip does not lead to an immediate arrest. Sometimes it takes months to "build a case" in order to effect an arrest. It is interesting to note that all 16 members of the criminal club were involved with both alcohol and drug use to some degree.
"Thank You" to the LE professionals who worked so well with us to help the Community and The Mountain.
Please continue to report crime to LE and SSP, AND to document incidents using the new tools on this site. Go to "File Report" after logging-in, and it will take 5 min. to file a report which will show on the map features and become part of the database. *Private info and non-public crime details, to include suspicions, should be placed under the "Personal Info" part of a Report*. This info can be viewed ONLY by LE and SSP senior staff.
Other tips and confidential info can continue to be sent directly to SSP at our new E-mail address: SSP@Jefferson-County.net.
If you are "wireless," call Nat at 725-SAFE.
Sources of tip info will continue to be safeguarded. Computer records are bio-passworded AND encrypted. Identities are safeguarded. Confidentiality remains a priority.
Let's continue to work together for a safe community.

How to Fight Back---A New Tool Rediscovered.
A Message from the SSP Chief, Nat Hughes:
Are you fed-up with underage perpetrators breaking into your home in search of prescription drugs, alcohol, money or easy-to-trade items? Are you fed-up with parents not maintaining control of their children or giving them alcohol or illegal drugs? Are you fed-up with parents covering up the criminal activity of their children?
LET'S GET PROACTIVE !
We have uncovered information to help the victims of crime.
If you are the victim of a crime and have substantial damage and/or inconvenience, here is what you can do (this is procedural information...NOT legal advice):
(a) Call the Prosecuting Attorney's Office (304-728-3243) and ask for help from the Victim's Advocate.
(b) File your own civil suit and put a lien on the property of the parents of the young perpetrator for reimbursement. You are entitled as a victim to get the names of the parents from the police report which the Victim's Advocate should send to you. The filing fee is small ($50.00 - $75.00) and the Magistrate Court (if your claim is under $5,000) or Circuit Court (if your claim is over $5,000) staff should help you file.....after all, they work for YOU!
Most crimes are solved using information from the tips you provide to SSP and Law Enforcement. Most Law Enforcement Officers are doing a superb job with the limited resources they have. They conduct investigations and make the arrests, but your tips remain VITAL! Talk to your children! They know the dealers who drive the criminal activity so that users may purchase their drugs. They are SCUM who kill children or ruin their lives for a quick profit!
You can also make a huge difference by helping Law Enforcement obtain the resources they need. You are part of "We the People": We set the agenda, and getting the resources, the officers, and the pay they deserve is OUR job! If we fail in that job, the result is chaos or anarchy.
Call your Jefferson County Commissioners, your state and local representatives and the Governor’s Office. Tell them you will ONLY vote for candidates who will take affirmative actions to make public safety a number one priority! Then ACT on that!! Only vote for those who ACTIVELY support this effort.....and get rid of those politicians who merely mouth the words.
Help SSP and Law Enforcement help you. Get tough.....ACT!
Disclaimer: SSP has never, and does not, attempt to provide legal advice. The procedural information stated above is true to the best of our knowledge and has been gathered from multiple calls and visits to county offices and law enforcement.

It looks good to me. So many people don't even know the basics - i.e. call the VICTIMS" ADVOCATE! Jeez that is what they are paid to do!
Snow Alert for Saturday, 2-11-06
Major forecast centers and several computer models are predicting a 70% chance of significant snowfall for this coming Saturday, with a possible accumulation of 6 inches by Sat. evening. Of course, the usual disclaimer talks about IF there is a shift in wind pattern....there will be more or less impact. Check your NOAH Weather Station or favorite public broadcast station on Friday evening for a more accurate prediction.

Possible Stalker in Area
I received info today of an incident wherein a 11 year old girl was followed by an older man in a newer, red Dodge pickup truck. Driver was described as having gray hair, sunglasses, red shirt and "mullet cut" type of hairstyle, i.e., combed back on top and sides, and long in the back. No tag info is available. Incident took place in the Grey Fox- Grey Ghost area, was reported by the girl's parents to the Sheriff's Dept. and investigated by two Deputies.
A detailed report will be posted by SSP member assisting on the call as soon as he returns to the area.
Anyone with knowledge of a vehicle meeting this description, please email SSP@jefferson-county.net or call 725-SAFE. Thanks.

need more info please
Can we please get more info on this?? (I live very very close to this incident) I heard from a neighbor about this incident and I had a hard time finding this posting. It was not on the main page under recent reports. I am also a subcriber and I did not get an email about this. I am afraid that people are not going to see it. Also- can we post this on the Shannondale.org forum, becuase that gets a lot of views. Also- might I suggest passing out flyers to the School Bus Drivers. Bus Drivers are very attentive....they may notice if this vehicle is parked near the stops.
Report Being Posted Now.
The SSP member primarily involved in the investigation has been away and unable to post the report until tonite. All info known at the time was posted in an alert for wider dissemination.
Membership in the Forum will not generate automatic alerts and notices. A member must select topic areas of interest and click on "subscribe" to be enrolled in automatic updates to the topic. I recommend that all Shannondale residents subscribe to the topic "SSP Alerts, Announcements and Requests" to ensure an email alert.
An alternative to subscribing to specific topics would be to check the content areas in the green areas on the right of your screen for active topics and new comments.
SSP and LE view this as a serious event and have spent many hours trying to track down the vehicle so that LE could interview the owner and obtain background & history of the person involved. There have been no other reports of a vehicle fitting this description being involved in other incidents of following anyone. The alert was posted as a precaution until all aspects of the situation could be fully investigated.
Most of the SSP members are parents and are fully committed to the safety and well-being of our most vulnerable residents. New leads are being pursued at this time and any new info will be posted under this topic. We request that parents of younger children be extra vigilant until we are able to determine all the facts and resolve this situation.

Scams Also Bloom in Spring!
Our SSP Chief, Nat Hughes, asked that I remind folks that Springtime is primetime for various scams:
--I have extra _____ left over from a big job.
--I need a demo project at cost in your neighborhood.
--I'll share my profits with you if you will show my work.
--The State will pave your road if all driveways are paved.
All of the above should bring you to a state of heightened alert. There are many more "come-ons," but you get the picture.
Other scams are "bait and switch" types involving inferior materials and workmanship. The most infamous groups are the traveling "asphalt drive sealers" that move quickly from state to state to avoid prosecution. The job is done quickly at a reasonable cost and looks great--until a hard rain when the watered-down sealer, or the home-made mixture of kerosene and coal dust washes on to your lawn or into your well!
Your best protection? Become an informed consumer. Ask for ID, preferably a state-issued picture ID, AND a good look at the state-issued Business License. If the person refuses, get vehicle description and tag number, report incident to County Dispatch at 725-8484 and call 725-SAFE. Please file a report on WJC to alert others.
If the person passes the initial test above, get description of work, list of approved materials, cost details and guarantee/warranty IN WRITING on company letterhead. Insist on the right to inspect materials (look for factory seals on cans and spec labels on other supplies) and to be there when any work is performed. Put these details in the contract and specify that payment will be made ONLY on completion of quality work as described. NEVER pay anything "up front," and inform seller that you will NOT pay for any work not written into the contract. Check-out contact info (phone, address, etc.) before you sign a contract.
If there are any suspicions about the legitimacy of the Business License, verify it by calling the State Business License Office at 304-267-0022 (Martinsburg). If it still "doesn't feel right," give Nat a call at 725-SAFE and let him check things out also.
