Missing Maryland teens

Rachel Smith, from North Potomac, along with her friend Rachel Crites, have been missing since Friday, January 19th.

They were going to a movie in Georgetown on Friday afternoon and haven't been seen since.

Rachel Smith is 5'1" tall and weighs about 118 lbs. She has green eyes and medium-length brown hair (the photo below is a fairly current one of her). She is 16 and is too old for an "Amber Alert".

Rachel Crites is 5'4" tall and weighs about 110 lbs. She has brown eyes and brown medium-length hair

The last phone call received from the girls on Friday afternoon was actually traced to a cell tower in
Charles Town, WV.

They were last known to be traveling in a dark blue 1997 Subaru Outback Station Wagon with a black cargo box on the roof. The license plate number is MD: MBJ 485.

Anyone who has any knowledge of where these girls might be, or has seen the vehicle, please call 911.

Recent writings by one of the girls places them in the "at risk" category. A recent photo of both girls is attached below under "attachment."

Further Update

Based upon the only recent, credible sighting report of the two girls on Tuesday in the Shannondale area, family members and friends travelled to the area Saturday to talk with LE and SSP.

Arrangements were made for a saturation search of the area on Sunday, using the Gate 3 entrance as a meeting area. The JCSD followed up on a couple of good leads, but with negative results. State Police and other LE were also involved.

Additional flyers were handed-out to anyone who appeared interested in helping. If you did not receive a flyer, please print out the pictures in the red box above and carry them with you in your vehicle.

Missing girls.

Thanks for all of your assistance on this. The latest information that we have received is that the two are now in the Hagerstown area.

Not the Ending We Had Hoped for....

WJC was notified early this evening that the Loudoun County Sheriff had issued a bulletin this afternoon stating that the missing Subaru had been found in a wooded area off of SR9 in VA near the WV state line.

The bodies of two young females were found in the vehicle, but positive ID had not been confirmed at the time. The families had been notified by the Sheriff. Out of respect for the family members and friends having to deal with this tragedy, no further details will be posted.

Our collective thoughts and prayers go out to the family members and friends of these two young women who must struggle to make some sense out of all that has happened. May God comfort you and keep you strong.

In Memoriam: Rachel Smith

Our collective hearts reach out in sympathy to the families of both Rachel Smith and Rachel Crites. As Ron so aptly stated in the previous posting, the ultimate ending is definitely not what any of us had hoped for! May God be with the families in their time of sorrow....

During a conversation with Paul Smith (father of Rachel Smith) this afternoon, we learned the following:

* The family is holding up exceedingly well, given the tragedy of having lost a loved one

* For those who may wish to attend, the funeral for Rachel will be held at 10:30 AM, Wednesday, February 7, 2007 at:

Congregation B'Nai Tzedek
10621 South Glen Road
Potomac, MD 20854
301-299-0225

* The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, those who wish to contribute do so to the Rachel Smith fund in-care-of the Congregation's address above. All funds collected will be dispersed to organization(s) such as the National Center For Missing and Exploited Children.

* The family sincerely wishes to thank all members of WV Law Enforcement, Jefferson County, the Shannondale Community, and the Shannondale Safety Patrol for their assistance, caring, and efforts to locate the missing girls.

* The Smith family intends to visit our community again on a continuing basis, perhaps starting in the Spring, and continue the friendships they have established here.

May both Rachels find the peace and happiness they so longed for.
