Tips on Vehicle Break-ins
Citizens of Jefferson County:
Unfortunately long gone are the days of leaving windows open on your vehicles and even residences if you lived in a country or rural setting (I remember days growing up on the farm where every summer night the windows were open to allow a cool breeze and the noise from the cattle would be the only thing you heard).
To help minimize the possibility of break-ins or thefts from a vehicle, please do the first common sense thing and lock the doors. A lot of the thieves focus on easy targets. Do not leave valuables in the vehicle or at least those that can be easily seen from outside the vehicle. These include wallets, purses, keys, computer equipment, loose change or anything of value that is easy to carry or conceal.
A second prevention key is motion detectors. They may be annoying at first, but a simple flood of light will at least make the "criminal" stop and may alert others who are more nocturnal than the rest. The common sense step here then as well would be to park your vehicle under the coverage of the light.
