Gang Awareness Seminar

Two SSP Responders, Dave and Sid, attended the seminar on gangs at the new Immigration and Customs Training Center last night. The seminar was taught by Sheriff Boober, JCSD.

The bottom line is that "gangs" (defined as any three or more individuals sharing a unique name or having identifiable marks or symbols, congregating on a regular basis, having an identifiable hierarchy and engaging in antisocial, unlawful or criminal activity) are here but there is little evidence that there is harm in the community so far, only potential for the worst elements to develop.

Sheriff Boober is promoting awareness, particularly among parents, and education among the younger citizens of our communities who are most vulnerable.

Attached below is a handout sponsored by Department of Justice and designed to assist parents in identifying and countering gang influences.

An addendum received by email from Dave: The presentation was hosted by Barb Miller (DHS),
and was presented by Sheriff Boober and two of his Deputies (Cpl. Ron Fletcher and Deputy Vince Tiong).

Not only did the presentation address gang presence and local activity, but also provided educational information on "tagging" (the marks we see painted on buildings, bridges, etc.), gang symbols and tattoos as well as the tagging alphabet.

ATTACHED ABOVE is the Tattoos Training PowerPoint Presentation used in the seminar. Some of the content is disturbing/offensive, but is presented in the interest of public safety and parent awareness.
